Lap timers come in all different shapes and sizes ranging from a cheap and cheerful stop watch to a multifunction data analyser costing several hundreds of pounds.
If you are attempting to set up your Car/Bike/Kart, or improve your lap times, you need one! Following a race or practice session, lap timing data is usually available from the mstworld website. Whilst this is very useful, it is not the same as recording lap times during a test session. During testing you will be concentrating on taking the best lines through corners (which may not be the ones that you thought were quickest) or making adjustments to the car, and comparing lap or split lap times.
When racing you are probably trying to get get past the Guy in front or stopping the one behind getting past you. Best laps will be pretty random.
It is not necessary for the novice Club racer to possess a top of the range all singing and dancing data logger. You would probably do better to spend the money on some lessons with an ARDS instructor.
It is also not vital to have a beacon. There is normally at least one beacon at most race circuits on a test day. You will however need one if you are doing split times or you are at a track without one or anyone else using one.
Being as I am running my racing on a shoestring, I have carried out some research into affordable timers that do the job!

THE ENTRY LEVEL LT32 FROM OTTO RACING (formerly Kartronix)
KARTRONIX have been manufacturing Lap timers in Cambridge England for many years. They have recently changed the name of the Company to "Otto Racing" in order to avoid any confusion that their products are only intended for Karting. The timers are infact suitable for any type of circuit racing, or indeed anywhere that the vehicle will pass an infra red beacon at the start and finish!
Being a British designed and manufactured unit, it is not only very reliable, but if you do have any questions, Tony at Otto is more than helpful. He also races himself, and therefore understands what is required of a timer from a drivers point of view.
The LT32 comes with a 2 year Warranty and features: 32 lap memory Adjustable blanking of other beacons (5 - 60 seconds), to avoid false triggering. Fastest Lap feature Adjustable sensitivity Minimum 30 hour battery life with Alkaline PP3 Easy to use, comes with full instructions.
