XJS CHAMPIONSHIP BRANDS HATCH 2006

PRACTICE/QUALIFYING (updated 25th July)

Gordan Bobic in his V12 auto only managed 3 laps due to a wiring problem to fuel pump, and qualified 17th. Simon Seath in his new bright green class D car had the most fun when his brakes locked on, and subsequently caught fire! Despite only completing 8 laps, he managed to qualify 12th. As usual there were many people trying to help and offering suggestions. It is always best to look at the simple obvious things first. It transpired that the pedal was not releasing properly due to a problem with the brake light switch bracket. The brakes seemed to have survived the cooking, but I think I would change the caliper seals before the next race!

Elsewhere Derek Pearce was in his traditional top spot, and Gary Hastings was nearly .5 second faster than Gail Hill qualifying 2nd. David Weaver was 4th quickest, but seemed to have sustained some damage in the process.

.

Pic1 Gail encounters a sideways David Weaver at Druids. Pic 2 Robert Macvicar and Bruce Cologne-Brookes follow Gail Hill towards Graham Hill Bend.

Sam Clarke the lone class E driver was a little off the pace in 6th. Robert Macvicar had his best qualifying session this season, ahead of Bruce Cologne-Brooks in 10th.

THE RACE

David Weaver took off like a rocket, and was up to second by the end of the first lap, less than 1.5 seconds behind Derek! John Lock and Gail had a bad start, losing out to Sam Clarke who quickly made up for his poor qualifying position. Simon Seath also had a cracking first lap, making up 3 places, as did Gordan Bobic.

.

Pic1 Patrick Felgenhauer makes a move on Gordan Bobic shortly before a trip into the gravel relegates Patrick to the back of the pack! Pic2 With Sam disapearing into the sunset, Gary puts the pressure on David.

Lap5 Sam made it past David Weaver and starts hunting down Derek Pearce.

Patrick Felgenhauer had a trip into the gravel trap on lap 2 following a failed overtaking manouvre, which put him at the back of the pack! Gordan Bobic had a bad race due to a problem with the throttle linkage, and was seriously off the pace by mid session. This was good news for Paul Reynolds who went on to pick up another class F win!

Simon Seath had a good battle with Dexter Dimblebee, which resulted in a bit of contact and another place further up the field for Simon.

.

Pic 1 Robert Macvicar doing a fine job of keeping Matt Skelton firmly behind. Pic 2 Simon Seath had a fine and lengthy battle with Dexter Dimblebee, well deserving of driver of the day!

Up the sharp end there was was a close battle between Gail Hill, John Lock, and Gary Hastings for most of the race. Gail and Gary touched at Druids on lap 6, and Gail managed to gain a place. It was now John's turn to put the pressure on Gary. By lap 13 John Lock had also made it past.

Things were about to get a lot worse however for Gary when he lost it on the exit from Druids on the last lap, sliding into the tyres on the left hand side followed by a spin across the track, coming to rest at the entrance to Graham Hill bend on the opposite side. The car was not badly damaged, but would not start, otherwise Gary may have been able to salvage some points.

The last two paragraphs have been changed, as I incorrectly reported that Gary Hastings retirement on the last lap followed a collision with Gail Hill. Sorry!

.

Pic1 Gary Hastings failed to finish after running wide on the exit from Druids . Pic2 As hard as he tried, Matt Skelton could not find a way past Robert Macvicar.

By lap 5 Sam Clarke was up to 2nd, having made it past David Weaver. As the laps went by Sam got closer with often less than a second seperating them. Not bad for a humble 3.6 litre V a 6 litre V12!

.

Pic 1 Gail Hill leading John Lock and Gary Hastings, displaying a battle scar from the earlier encounter with Gary. Pic2 Derek Pearce with a fast closing Sam Clarke.

Driver of the day was Simon Seath!

.

PPic1 Simon Seath receives his trophy for Driver of the day. Pic2 Sam Clarke receives his class E award.

Any pictures & stories relevent to this meeting would be most welcome.
