JAGUAR CLASSIC PARTS JEC SALOON CHAMPIONSHIP

Snetterton 5th/6th April 2008

SATURDAY & SUNDAY's RESULTS BELOW

RACE 1 (Report by Mathew Jeffery)

Andrew Jeffery's Lister XJ6.

PRACTICE/QUALIFYING

It was Tim Morrant on pole in his Series 2 XJ6. Richard Dorlin was in 2nd.

Andrew Jeffery & John Slater during practice.

Dean Sewell qualified 16th. Above pictures suppliedc by Mathew Jeffery, thanks!

Richard blew his head gasket towards the end of practice, but with the very hard work of Dave Bye, Peter Dorlin, Dean Sewell and a few others, the car was fitted with a new head gasket for the race. A head gasket usually takes around 6 hours on these engines, but the team managed to replace it in 2!

THE RACE

The track was soaking wet, as there was a sudden rain storm while they were in the assembly area. This means they were given 2 warm-up laps.

The grid formed, red lights on and Tim had a bad start in his XJ with Richard jumping into 1st. Tim dropped quite a few places but fought very hard to recover. Dave Bye in his XJ6 Coupe found himself in 2nd with Ken Angell in 3rd.

Ken Angell was a previous stock car driver, so rain does not scare him! Phil Woods was in 4th, another capable driver in the rain. Ken & Phil were fighting out for 3rd and 4th position. In the end it was Phil who took a great 3rd place, with Ken 4th.

Further down the pack, Brian George in the Automatic X300 had a great start making up 2 places. Andrew Jeffery had a terrible start after the Mk11 of Simon Hollingsworth (DRAX 1) could not lay any traction down on the grid. Andrew was trapped with Brian behind.

Richard was still leading the pack, with Dave in 2nd. Andrew Jeffery made back three places only to loose them in a 360degree spin, stalling the engine! He managed to get one place back though!

Colin McKay was pleased to qualify in front of Peter Dorlin, but it was all downhill from there on! Colin had a spin on lap 3 demoting him to 16th and only managing to recover one place before the premature end of the race on lap 6!

The new driver, Duncan Ross had a good race until he spun at the chicane. Another new driver, Patrick Doyle (son of Kevin "Hannibal" Doyle) did very well and seemed to be getting to know the track well.

A great win for Richard in his Series 3 XJ. (Thanks Mathew)

2007 Champion Chris Boon has some work to do if he is to take the crown in 2008. Pic Mark Stabler, many thanks!

Any pictures & stories relevant to this meeting would be most welcome.

BEFORE THE RACE

Both Dean Sewell & Robert McViacar failed to make the grid on Sunday due to head gasket failures. Andrew Jeffery's clutch failed at their Hotel Saturday night!

Following the hail downpour during Saturdays race, and waking up to snow on Sunday, no one new quite what to expect for race 2!

Due to the premature end to Saturdays race & the poor conditions, the grid for race 2 was not as you would normally expect. Philip Woods & Ken Angel were both a bit nearer the sharp end than you would normally expect from last years form. On the other hand this is a brand new season, and much work and improvements may have taken place over the winter period. The safest rule with regards to racing is, don't assume anything!

Simon Lewis in particular had a whole lot of work to do starting from the back of the grid. This all promised to be an action packed 2nd race of the season/weekend!

THE RACE (report to follow)

19 big cats lined up on the grid for race 2.

Kevin Doyle gives Son Patrick a final bit of fatherly advice before hitting the track in "Son of Enola"

Green flag lap (just missed Richard Dorlin in pole).

Dave Bye was determined to deprive Richard Dorlin of a double race victory at the first meeting of the season, but failed to make it past on lap one, indeed a charging Howard Kirkham looked at one stage to be a serious threat to Bye for second place!

Richard Dorlin maintains the lead on lap one whilst Howard Kirkham makes up 4 places to 3rd!

Philip Woods & Ken Angel both lost several places on the opening lap, a dry track obviously not working in their favour! Peter Dorlin gained one place, but on the downside now had Howard Kirkham in front!

Phil Woods lost several places on lap 1, with much close activity taking place in midfield.

Colin McKay & Simon Lewis were both hoping for better fortunes in race 2, but despite Simon making up several places on the start they both struggled to make much further progress.

Towards the other end of the grid Colin Mckay keeps Simon Lewis at bay (for now)!

Meanwhile back at the front Dorlin & Bye never failed to entertain, although it could be tricky to know who was actually in the lead at times!

.

One of these cars needs a distinguishing stripe etc if the seasons going to continue like this!

Despite his early rapid pace & progress, Howard came under increasing pressure from 2007 champion Chris Boon.

Chris Boon in persuit of Howard Kirkham & Peter Dorlin.

Both Peter Dorlin & Chris Boon eventually made it back past Howard Kirkham who had shown so much promise early in the race!

Peter Dorlin piles the pressure on Howard Kirlham!

Tim Morrant was on a charge for the latter half of the race, but could do no better than third despite achieving the fastest lap of the race, had there been more laps who knows!

Tim Morrant having started in ninth was most keen to make up a few places. Peter Dorlin was next!

David Bye wins the race, but the evidence suggests that Brands Hatch could well be a three way battle between cars 57, 32, & 62!

Race over David Bye wins, Richard Dorlin second & Tim Morrant third 10 seconds behind.
