FUTURE CLASSICS FINAL RACE 2007

The new CSCC Future Classics series attracted 21 cars to the final race of their first season.

GETTING THERE

Despite this being the first race that I had entered following the crash at Mallory on the 24th June, I still had many last minute things to do.

Apart from repairing the damage to the wing, door, & rear panel, I also had to rebuild the rear Calipers again! (If I ever get to go on Mastermind, my specialist subject will be removing rebuilding and refitting rear calipers XJS 1975 - 1987).

I also decided that the time had come to fit a bias valve, and whilst in plumbing mode a hydraulic handbrake. Then it was out with the passenger seat and the list goes on..........!

This race was to be more of a test session for the forthcoming Birkett, than a serious attempt to win the race! Having said that, I was determined not to come last again after the embarrassment of two last places in the races at Anglesey in June!

Robert Alman who I had quite a battle with at Anglesey made it past myself and Simon Smith in the Peugeot 106 at Copse. At the same time I made it past the Ball brothers in their newly acquired bright yellow V12 XJS (formerly John Hassles car).

Dave Robbie Lap1 followed by a charging Peugeot 106, Dave Ball, & Bruce Cologne Brookes

Things began to settle for a while, although Woolard/Ritchie in another 106 and Bruce Cologne-Brookes in another XJS were on my tail just waiting for me to make a mistake. Lap 6 was a disaster, as Philip Comer who had gradually made his way up the grid, managed to pass me as I ran wide at Luffield, things then progressively got worse as I ran even wider at Copse allowing the Peugeot (23) to get by, almost immediately their engine expired in clouds of smoke which made me slow and alow Bruce to get past.

I was on Bruce's bumper throughout the next lap apart from the many excursions he made! It was at Copse on the following lap that I managed to take advantage of Bruce running wide to finally regain my position! Meanwhile Philip was now a dot in the distance! Not good news!

By lap 9 Martyn Adams in the very rapid TR7 had lapped me whilst 2nd placed John Dench in the Red Porsche 911RS took another lap to catch and pass me. At this stage Martyn seemed to have the race to himself, in the absence of Steve Davis!

Around lap 12 several of the front runners from the Tin Tops race also started lapping me. At the same time I began to lap backmarkers making it somewhat interesting trying to decide whether the blue flags were for me or the car I was about to lap!

There was only one thing for it, a pit stop and a nice cup of tea. Unfortunately my pit crew failed miserably with the Earl Grey, therefore I jumped straight back in the car, strugled with the seat belt for an eternity and was away again 45 seconds later! (if this was F1 I would have had a new set of tyres 20 litres of petrol and a new nose cone in this amount of time!)

The Lyddall Harrison changeover!

The track was fairly clear when I re emerged until Dalwood/Dudley in a Rover 216 made it by at Woodcote. Not happy about this quickly got back in front and battled for a lap until the Lyddal/Harrison car lapped me coming into Copse! I think it must have been Andrew Harrison at the wheel as as he was oversteering like mad, only just managing to keep it out of the kitty litter!

Next problem was loads of traffic and whilst lapping Astley in the MGB for the second time, he ran wide at Becketts giving me no alternative than to go straight on and then round the wrong side of the kerb!

This followed another quite period where I could reflect upon my life and the growing number of DIY jobs outstanding in the Robbie household! Then I spotted Philip Comer who I was still seething over, looming in the distance! If there was one thing I was going to do today it was to put right this terrible wrong!

As John Dench came to Lap me for the the 3rd time on lap 29 at Luffield Philip was good enough to let the two of us past! It was then traffic all the way to to the cheqeured flag!

Despite a great result for the Lyddall Harrison team, they are just to be lapped by John Dench!
