MALLORY PARK 2006

RACE RESULT BELOW, MORE PICTURES TO FOLLOW!

GETTING THERE

Cadwell Park was a disaster for me from start to Finish Two DNF's a badly damaged spoiler & dented wing. Unfortunately for me, this meant lots of hard work to get the car back on the track. Hence missing two races. The DNF's were caused by terminal corrosion in the block. Fortunately I was offered engines by several drivers. Thanks everyone! I eventually ended up with two engines, and fitted the one that I removed from Gordan Bobics XJ40. I will be doing an article on engine changing in the next few weeks.

The work finished at about 3PM on Sunday afternoon. Off to Mallory!

Pic1. Welcome to Jaguar racing at Mallory. Pic2 V12 E type racer, one of many superb exhibits on the Jaguar Daimler heritage stand.

PRACTICE

Having not driven the car for more than 20 yards since the engine swap, it was all a bit of an unknown quantity. I had not read the instructions until the morning of the race, which clearly stated that inboard cameras needed prior permission. Despite trying quite hard, I failed to find anyone that could help.

I like Mallory, and the car always seems to perform well on this circuit. It took me 3 laps to find a clear bit of track and get to work on reducing my lap times. Unfortunately by lap 6 the car started to cough and splutter, and lap times increased by about 4 seconds! The mind immediately goes into overload, trying to decipher the clues. I soon noticed that the fuel pressure gauge was reading next to 0.

Despite all this, I qualified 14th out of 24 having completed only 7 out of the 14 laps. Steve Avery took Pole, with Derek Pearce a fraction slower in 2nd and Gail less than .5 of a second behind in 3rd. Eddie Wilkins made his debut in 4th, driving Ian Suggetts new car (3.6L class D spec). John Lock was probably disappointed to be down in 8th, having achieved Pole a few weeks ago!

The Qualifying sheet is a little confusing as it has Dexter Dimblebee and Phil Taylor as class I (Should be D). Patrick Felgenhauer as class G (should be D). When I mentioned this to Terry Dye, he pointed out that it is the drivers responsibility to check that the details are correct, and to inform them of any discrepancies!

IN BETWEEN

Several of the more wealthy drivers compete in additional races, such as PBJ. This has the advantage of more track time, but obviously puts more strain on the cars, and doubles the risk of failure for a variety of reasons. Robin North & Simon Seath were involved in an accident with a spinning Maestro at Gerard's in practice for the combined PBJ & Sports car V Saloon challenge. After some modifications with Gaffer tape, Simons car was fit to race again. Robin was not so lucky and failed to compete in either the PBJ or XJS races!

THE RACE

Having at last received permission to fit the camera, I ran out of time as the second call came over for the cars to go to the assembly area for the first race, and I hadn't even got my suit on!

Within minutes I was on the start grid waiting for the lights to go out. Bruce Cologne Brookes was along side me (which was a worry!) Andy Gardner in front to the left, and Simon Seath directly in front albeit two rows in front.

The lights went out and I had a better start than usual, side by side with And Gardner around Gerard's. Just coming onto Stebbe straight Dexter started to loose it and eventually spun in front of me. Fortunately I missed him and continued in my pursuit af Andy. The red flags soon appeared due to a heavy impact with the Armco by Dexter.

I don't think we will be seeing this shell on the track again!

START 2

There was much confusion trying to reverse most of the cars back into the original start position. I'm sure it would have been far easier and quicker If we had all gone round again!

..

The second start was also quite good, and I quickly found myself on Simon Seath's bumper. By lap two we were side by side for most of the lap and I eventually made it past. I spent the next 9 laps behind Andy Gardner, but despite a marginally quicker best lap time, there was no way that I was going to get past. I was very pleasantly surprised to see Simon's No17 gradually fading in the rear view mirror. The situation was not to last however, as the car started to splutter again on lap 11as I lapped Paul Reynolds, only to be unlapped at the next corner. Simon Seath soon appeared in my mirror again, and was quickly in front again. I was delighted to see the last lap board and preyed that the car would hang on. Fortunately it did and I crossed the line side by side one tenth in front of Bruce. Had it not been for Dexter I would not have finished the race. Must buy him a pint!

Elsewhere (sideways) Steve Avery gave the usual front runners something to think about with a second win in the invitation class. Derek Pearce got the better second start, but by lap 5 Steve was back in front. Gail had a good but uneventful race staying in 3rd throughout, having already won the championship at Oulton Park.

John Lock had a good race considering he had a bad stomach, and managed to make it past Lawrence Coppock and Eddie Wilkins on lap 3. Andy Gardner also made up 3 places proving that you can be competitive in a very standard car!

John Hassell in the striking yellow class G car made up the most places during the race, starting 22nd and finishing 17th.

Gordan Bobic won class F with a good drive making up 4 places. Sadly there was no class E entry.

Apart from the trophies for class and race wins etc John Hassell won driver of the day in his first G outing of the season, and I was presented with a Toyo fleece for the early battle with Simon Seath!

I must appologise for the quality of the pictures. Had a bad camera day!

PADDOCK GOSSIP.

Hopefully Steve Avery will be out in class G next season along with Gail Hill and Derek Pearce. Should be interesting!

John Hassell's pristine yellow 6 litre XJS is up for sale, and John is threatening to be out in class E next season. Hopefully with Sam Clarke, although I have heard rumours that his car may be up for sale!

Dexter Dimblebee is considering a year off from racing! Why?

We may see Eddie Wilkins out again next season, certainly his debut looked very promising.

Why not join in the debate on 2007 Regs which is gathering momentum on the JEC Forum http://www.jec-racing.org.uk/racbb2/viewtopic.php?p=150#150
