Silverstone April 1st 2006
The first JEC race meeting of the year for the Saloon Challenge, the XJS and Powered by Jaguar Championships. Several new drivers were out for the first time, especially in class D XJS.
The forecast was for rain, which pleased some, but probably not the newcomers. Fortunately for a lot of them the track was dry by the time the XJS's went out for qualifying. This was not so welcome for Simon Seath however, as he had managed an impressive 4th on the grid in rain for the PBJ.
QUALIFYING XJS

This is the time when you find out whether all of those hours of groveling around under the car during the cold winter months was worthwhile.
I think most people that have been following the XJS championship would have been expecting to See Derek Pearce in pole, with Gail Hill 1st in class D, and Gordan Bobic Ist in F.
It was good to see Gary Hastings fronting up the D's, and 3rd overall! Gail is pretty much back on form, and Dexter Dimblebee has made much progress in qualifying 3rd in D.
John Lock, Matt Skelton, and Patrick Felgenhauer all performed well in their first outings. They have all given me something to think about for my first 2006 race at Snetterton!
It would be nice to see some more entrants in G and E, so get those spanners working Simon Currell and the rest of you!
RACE XJS
.
Green flag lap with Derek Pearce leading the field to the start line for the season opener.
Everyone got away well with Derek Pearce 3 seconds ahead of David Weaver on the first lap. Gary Hastings was a second behind, closely followed by Gail Hill. Simon Seath made a good start, making up two places, whilst Wayne Ulph dropped back two, and Stuart 5 places.
Patrick Felgenhauer having lost out on the start, had a good close battle with Simon Seath, and eventually got back past No.17 on lap 5. They remained bumper to bumper until the end.
Bruce Cologne-Brookes also had a good start going from 16th to 13th, unfortunately it all went pear shaped on lap 4, relegating Bruce to 16th.
The closest battle however was between Gary and Gail, often side by side at the end of Club Straight with Gary just keeping ahead entering Brooklands. The Red flag came out after disaster struck on lap 8 which I believe occurred on the exit from Woodcote. I, and I'm sure all the other drivers were pleased to hear that Gary was released from hospital with no more than a stiff neck.
POWERED BY JAGUAR
David Weaver and David Ball started from the pit lane after the restart.

Just 9 Cats joined the restart after the first lap accident. Steve Davis retained the lead until lap 9 when James Dodd in his D type took over the lead. James took the chequered flag .748 of a second ahead of Steve.

Sam Clarke did well to get Steve Davis's XJS back out for the first race of the afternoon, after suffering a rear drive shaft hub failure in practice. This left Sam little time to prepare his own car for qualifying in the XJS Championship.
Steve is no longer praying for rain!
GOSSIP
A last minute decision by David Weaver to buy the Classic Spares Championship winning class G car, has meant that Derek may have some respite from Gary Davis for a couple of races. I understand however that Donnington may see the return of Gary and Ray. Things did not go entirely to plan with Davids new car after it was caught up in the mayhem at the start of the PBJ race. David made the restart, but was hampered by no brake servo due to damage to the vacuum cylinder at the front of the car.
.
Some minor fettling required following the first lap incident in the PBJ race. First pic is David Weaver with the Ex Classic Spares Car. Second pic is William Lynch looking on as a friend carries out some wheel arch mods.
A few of the XJS drivers from last year have migrated to PBJ and are unlikely to be seen in the XJS Championship this year. These include: David Ball, Loz Ball, Steve Davis, Kevin Doyle, and William Lynch. In fact the PBJ so far looks more like the alternative XJS Challenge, with no less than 9 XJS's. Hopefully the usual mix will come out of hibernation very soon. Winter is officially over!
.
It really is about time that David Ball fixed that numberplate back on! I'm sure I recall a picture of No.4 coming out of Russell bend 3 abreast at Snetterton 2005 with the number plate in the same position! Second pic, no prizes for guessing where Brian George has been!
Another driver missing this year is John Griffin, who I was looking forward to being in front of this season. He must have heard!
Paul Jocelyn Brown has decided to give up racing and move to France!
Simon Currell wants to keep it quite that he is preparing a car for class E, so please keep it to yourself!
Unfortunately Steve Davis will not be compiling XJS Championship video footage this year, any volunteers?
I haven't got any pictures of the actual race due to trying out my new video camera, this was not a great success!

Its reassuring to know that its not just the Jaguar races where things occasionally go wrong. Joe Henderson 88 and Jon Wolfe 3, were inches apart for the entire TSCC race until they were side by side on the last lap at the end of Club, and finally locked together straight into the Kitty litter at Brooklands.
