TOYO TYRES XJS CHAMPIONSHIP.
POWERED BY JAGUAR SALOON PAGES ARE NOW AVAILABLE
UPDATED 18th JULY 2007
21 drivers made the journey to Lincolnshire for rounds 6 & 7 of the XJS Championship. One of the most notable factors is the number of Non finishes in most of the races. This follows a relatively trouble free JEC display at Mallory a few weeks ago.
PRACTICE/QUALIFYING
Andrew Harrison had a somewhat frustrating qualifying session only managing to achieve one good flying lap! Gail Hill was also a little dissapointed to qualify behind top Class D driver John Lock. Stewart Lyddal only managed 7th with two class D cars ahead of him, but this was at least partly due to the bad stomach he was to suffer from all weekend!
Otherwise no real surprises. Derek Pearce was back on form with Pole, but Paul Merrett was way down the grid in 17th following a brilliant qualifying at Mallory in the wet!

RACE 1 SATURDAY
The race got of to a bad start after Stewert Lyddall stalled, Lawrence Coppock caught Stewerts O/S/R with plenty of fibreglass spraying across the track! Several over cars were involved in a start line shunt as a result, including Roger Webster, Phil Taylor, Stephen Bantleman and Paul Reynolds. Phil's car has suffered serious rear end damage, and Paul's car did not make the second race either.
Steve Davis got away well however, and led the race from start to finish. Andrew Harrison endeavoured to make the most of the chaos, and was side by side with Stewert at Park outbraked him but then proceeded to go over the kerb and lost a place to David Eyles for his efforts!

Gail Hill was back in her V12 after trying out the 6 cylinder car at Mallory. Not terribly happy with her qualifying pace but quickly made it past John Lock and puttng the pressure on Steve Avery! Matt Skelton put in another strong drive managing to keep Mark Russell at bay till the flag!
Stewert Lyddall's day just got worse, as the feeling of sickness got the better of him. It would seem that this was not due to the motion sickness often suffered by many drivers at Cadwell (including Gail Hill & Gary Davis) but was brought on by an old neck injury sustained in a shunt at Brands Hatch 2005! Luckily this should soon be sorted by a few trips to the local chiropractor.
Andrew Harrison had a mostly good and eventful race, but lost a couple of places firstly at Barn to John Griffin whilst recovering from a grass excursion, and then outdragged by Dave Ball down Park straight leaving Andrew on the outside. The place gained was short lived as David hit the grass followed by a lengthy skid and trip onto the infield airborne at some stage! Somehow David made it back onto the track but lost several places!

David Eyles driving Kevin Doyles "Purple Ronnie" followed by, John Griffin, & Andrew Harrison MJ
Meanwhile David Eyles who had made his comeback in Kevin Doyles (Purple Ronnie) "just" managed to hold of John Griffin & Andrew Harrison until what was to be the final lap. John and Andrew managed to make it past "Purple Ronnie" through Copse and Charlies, only two lose their hard earned 9th & 10th places due to the premature end of the race! Sounds like John Griffin & Andrew Harrison had a good battle
"Sideways" Steve Avery overcooked it & spun on the exit of Mansfield (game over) followed shortly afterwards by Derek Pearce crashing heavily into the barriers at Chris Curve (no one else involved) resulting in a red flag on lap 8.
Derek's car was severely damaged, fortunately Derek himself is fine!
John Lock finished 3rd overall and 1st in class D. Mark Russell was 5th and 1st in class E. Paul Reynolds was the sole class F entrant but the start line incident finished his weekend!

An early end to Paul Reynolds weekend! AH
Thanks to Stewert Lyddall, Gail Hill, Andrew Harrison & Andrew Jeffery who have all helped with the above report. All of the above pictures were taken by Mathew Jeffery MJ, apart from the ones marked AH which were supplied by Andrew Harrison. Many Thanks!

SUNDAY RACE 2
Due to the events on Saturday 4 cars failed to make the start grid.
Gail Hill had a bad start losing 4 places with too much power and excessive wheelspin, this was followed by a close encounter with Lawrence Coppock who was having something of an eventful weekend.
Andrew Harrison was looking forward to another good race but when the lights went out, he launched, and swears a yellow flag popped out. He got off the power, whilst the grid streamed by, couldn't see an obstruction, grabbed 4th instead of second and found himself last, give or take! It was then into recovery mode following Dave Ball through past Roger Webster, followed by a good long close fight.

Dave Ball defending his position from Andrew Harrison AH
David Ball was close to Lawrence Coppock when he pulled off into the pit lane and retired. David was boxed in which gave Andrew the oppertunity to pass him with two wheels on the grass!
Mark Russell attempted to pass Andrew into Park, but Andrew held him off until Chris when Andrew over cooked it resulting in a massive spin off on approach to the Gooseneck. He then proceeded across the track onto the infield, losing his place to Mark and resuming the race back behind David Ball!

Andrew Harrison & Mark Russell AH
Mark Russell had a slippery moment on the grass at Chris curve, which helped Gail to get back up to third behind John Lock who proved to be quite a challenge.
"As I slowly reeled him in I went to quick through Mansfield and got onto the grass (it was still sopping wet) I managed to head back to the track and then made the error of tweaking the throttle before all the back wheels were on the hard stuff. It flicked me round back into the grass and into a tyre wall. Damage to bonnet, wings, front grill, headlights and door!!!!!!"
By the end of the race another 4 had failed to finish! Steve Davis class G won the race as usual, with a fine 2nd place from John Lock in class D. Steve Avery finished 3rd overall and first in Class E.
Most of the above content was provided by Andrew Harrison, & Gail Hill. Many thanks!
